ZUMBA FOR EVERYONE

Zumba is a fitness program that originated in Colombia in the 1990s. It was created by Alberto “Beto” Perez, a Colombian choreographer, dancer, and fitness instructor.

The Zumba story began when Beto Perez, who was an aerobics instructor at the time, forgot his traditional workout music for a fitness class he was teaching in Cali, Colombia. He improvised by using his personal cassette tapes of Latin and salsa music. In a moment of inspiration, Beto started to incorporate dance moves into his aerobic routine. He found that combining fitness moves with Latin dance steps not only made the workout more enjoyable but also increased participants’ energy and enthusiasm. Beto formalised this new fitness concept and called it “Zumba,” a word he coined from a Colombian slang term that means “to move quickly and have fun.” He and his business partners Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion later trademarked the term.
